A Summer's Grave

We stood amongst the graves on the summer's day
looking at one another
In silence
In stillness
As the dead watched us
and the words that remained unsaid
Maybe it was the way the sun laid
effortlessly across your face
that I fell into your embrace
with arms so strong
and hands so soft
You took my heart
and wrapped it in cloth
The name I called out longingly
which tasted so sweet
begrudgingly fell numb and cold
As I tried to call your name
no longer felt the same
no other name or word
graced my tongue
as you took the air from my lungs.
The melody of every note you played
echoed among the graves
that slowly began to fade
replaced by the cries of the dead
As I laid there, turning the earth red
As you walk away
heart in hand
red strings bind us together
both dammed
bound to one another
My eyes that used to see the future
began to blur with tears
from the truth, my fears
whispered to me
insistently
I laid amongst the graves
on the beautiful summer's day
feeling the cold red soil
recoil beneath me
accepting my unloved
rotting body
where it belongs
Maybe it was the way the sun laid
effortlessly across your face
that I fell into your embrace
with arms so strong
and hands so soft
You took my heart
and wrapped it in cloth
I shall wait through the
long, cold, lonely winter
for you, my love
where you will return with the sun.
